personal brand needed to get corporate job?
Hey Jude,
Everywhere I look online, especially on LinkedIn, people are talking about building a personal brand.
I am currently looking for a full time role and it feels like I am being told this is the only way to succeed in a job search.
The problem is, I am quite a private person. I am not keen to get on the mic or post regularly about work. My role as an operations manager is also not something people tend to find exciting or visible.
It feels like having a big online personality is now a requirement for getting hired. If that is true, I worry I am at a disadvantage. I am great at my job, but I am an introvert.
Is building a personal brand really the only way to get a corporate role today?
Simone
Is this necessary to get a job in 2026?
Hi Simone,
As someone who has built a personal brand online and benefited from it, I am going to give you an answer you may not expect.
You do not need a personal brand to get a corporate job.
First, let us be clear on what a personal brand actually is. From your email, it sounds like you are equating personal branding with being visible online. Posting regularly. Speaking publicly. Being loud.
That is not what a personal brand really means.
Chris Do describes it simply:
Seen through that lens, an online presence is just one possible expression of a personal brand. It is not the definition of it.
If your goal is a corporate role, focusing your energy on creating content or building an audience online is often not the best use of your time. There are three areas that matter far more.
First. Your CV. It should be up to date, clear and tailored to each role you apply for.
Second. Your network. Many roles are filled through conversations before they ever reach a job board. This does not require you to be extroverted. It requires you to stay connected in a way that feels comfortable and genuine to you.
Third. Authenticity. This can be hard in high pressure situations, especially interviews. Still, being yourself matters. People remember how you show up, not how well you perform.
You do not need to buy a mini mic or start talking to a camera to be employable.
That said, OFFLINE personal branding does matter.
This is how people experience you in rooms. In interviews. In meetings. At networking events. It is what you say, how you listen and how consistent you are over time.
Bozoma Saint John puts it well:
Getting a corporate job does not require an online persona.
What matters more is your experience, your network and your consistency. Your personal brand is not something you need to build online. It is something you already have.
